• Cost of infestation: In 2024, US businesses saw annual operating costs increase by $49.9bn as a result of pest infestation. Costs included damage to equipment and property, prosecution and compensation claims, and contamination of stock and finished goods.
• Impact on revenue: Businesses suffered a collective decrease of over $113bn of revenue due to impacts such as reputational damage, operational downtime and contract cancellations.
• Scale of revenue loss: Two thirds (67%) of businesses reported a greater than 10% decrease of annual turnover as a direct result of pest infestation and one in five experienced a shocking 20–29% hit to revenue.

The survey highlighted the impact of an infestation but also illustrated the likelihood of any given business experiencing an infestation.

How common are pest infestations?

Most businesses discover that attempting to save money by not adopting proactive pest control ends up costing them more, with the expense of recovering from an infestation far outweighing the outlay for prevention. And the numbers show how heavily the odds are stacked against businesses who opt for a ‘fingers crossed’ attitude to pest control:

• 96% Over the past five years, 240 of the 250 businesses surveyed (96%) suffered at least one infestation. Of those 240, 209 (84%) suffered two or more infestations.
• >99% Over 99% of businesses that suffered an infestation were unable to clear it within a week. 42% were unable to clear it within a month and two out of every three suffered disruption to their business for at least as long as the period of infestation.
• 99% Of the businesses that had suffered an infestation, 99% experienced a net decrease in turnover as a result of it.
